Fally Ipupa's Band F.VICTEAM latest project "Libre Parcours"

By Louis X. Aoko
In Congo’s war of musical dominance, Fally Ipupa reasserts his tenure yet again, as the contemporary rhumba king. This surpasses expectations from his mentor Kofi Olomide and rival Ferre Gola.

After releasing three successful albums Droit Chemin, Arsenal de Belles Melodies and Power Kosa Leka, the singer now presents 23 tracks produced by his 30-piece band F.Victeam in an album titled, Libre Parcours (Free Course), released on March 15.

Dare to bare: Artistes show more skin in tough showbiz market

On the first day of February in 2004, in full view of 100 million viewers, Janet Jackson’s famous ‘wardrobe malfunction’ during Super Bawl XXXVIII in the US revealed her bust. A worldwide uproar followed.
Locally, Karen Lucas, also known as Kaz, still walks with her head held high even after nude photos of her were revealed to the public.
She exudes confidence when Saturday Nation revisits the matter. “Nothing positive ever came out of my being taken advantage of, and I am not sure anything ever will,” she says.
In what appears to be a template in the entertainment industry, both locally and internationally, female artistes are growing bolder to further their careers.
Mwafrika, a comedy host on QTV, observes that the trend to go almost naked is because competition in showbiz has become more brutal.
“The entertainment industry is cutthroat and at times artistes may take a daring step to stay relevant,” says Mwafrika.

IN SUMMARY
The Democratic Republic of Congo is recognised in Kenya as the hub of rhumba music, which Fally Ipupa has steadily risen to be the undisputed king.

Congolese rhumba star Fally Ipupa is back with a new 26-song rhumba album that is likely to see his fortunes soar higher in the music industry.

As if this is not enough, the revered songwriter and electrifying guitarist will release another new-generation album in September. A Nairobi tour to promote the new music is in the works, he adds in an interview with Saturday Nation.

Available on iTunes and on a double CD, the newly-unveiled rhumba album, Power Kosa Leka, came out last week and has subtle political messages.
